I want to put up curtains/blinds in our new home, but I don't want to put holes in the walls just yet...?
My fiance and I just bought a beautiful house, and this is my first time ever decorating my own home. I want to put up nice curtains or blinds to block the bright sun in the morning. Is there any way NOT to put holes in the wall? I don't want to hire a professional b/c I really want to do it myself. Do you have any suggestions on easy installation without holes or damage to the wall? Thanks in advance!
Use tension rods in windows that are not too wide. These are held in place with tension that comes from a spring inside of them. You mount them inside the window frame. You would use them at least at the top, and, possibly the bottom too if you wanted that look.
Depending on your windows, you might also have the option of setting screens directly on the windowsill. By "screens", I mean privacy screen such as are used in some cultures, or sometimes you will see something that look like shutters but they are mounted inside the house not out.
If you want light but want it filtered, and don't mind the loss of the view, then one unusual but fairly striking window treatment that works with some windows is to mount a paper screen over it. Basicaly, a big piece of attractive translucent paper, possibly with design, with or without a lightweight frame depending on the size of the window. Think of Japanese Shoji screens.
Many lightweight things can be mounted with sticky mounts made by 3M. These do not damage the wall and can be removed when you decide that it's time for a change.
You would almost certainly need screws for blinds, but if you mount them inside the window, first of all you need less blind (and therefor less expense), and 2nd the holes will be relatively less conspicuous. Inside mounted look a little tidier too.
Keep thinking along these lines, and you will probably come up with a tasteful way of doing it.
